Making Lemonade Out of Life’s Little Lemons

On July 14, 2012 Big Key Self Storage held its first shredding event.

Sometimes life gives us lemons. In the storage world our lemons come in forms of “donations” left by tenants. Including but not limited to trash, unwanted furniture and documents. In the case of most items, Florida law allows for the storage facility to charge a disposal fee, but what happens when the left behinds are sensitive documents?

At our facility, having to find a way to dispose such documents became a learning experience. There aren’t many resources available in terms of what to do in such a situation, and countless calls brought us back to square one. Finally, after following and completing all the proper procedures the solution became obvious: We would have no choice but to shred our new found burden, a 10x25 full of medical records and papers. But how could we justify the cost, especially when there was no party available to charge.

“BINGO” we said, let’s make Lemonade out of Lemons: A FREE SHRED DAY for not only us but all our tenants as well. We are creating an opportunity for our loyal Big Key family and business clients to safely dispose of outdate sensitive documents FREE!

A paper shredding event we advertised and offered as a free service and plenty of people showed up to “get their shred on!” As a plus we provided music, free food and refreshments as well. Customers gathered and said their goodbyes to those pesky files and paperwork that were taking up valuable space in their offices and homes.

After hours of heavy loading and shredding, we were pressed for time and competing with the Miami heat throughout, but were almost finished. Having survived intact and creating smiles on the faces of happy customers, we sat an enjoyed a cold drink and good ol’ fashion air conditioning.

What began as a tricky situation, eventually evolved into a great time and free workout. And of course a clean, happy newly available 10X25 unit. All in all a great time was had and a valuable lesson learned: when life gives us lemons, make an all out lemonade event!

Toys for Tots and Big Key at Dolphin Game. — at Sun Life Stadium.

Big Key Self Storage: Sgt. Forenca from the US Marines invited me and my family to join their Toys for Tots collection at the Dolphin game this weekend. We collected toys and donations during the tailgate and first quarter of the game. The guys were so gracious,... and made everyone feel like we make a difference. Big Key is always a drop off location for Toys for Tots, and its great to see the toys coming in and the Marines picking them up each year. But this was a special treat, going to the stadium was something new for me and we had great results bringing in over 600 toys and over $5,000 in donations. On a personal level it was an honor to be invited to join them.

When we finally made it to the game, the US Marines were given box seats and they asked Myself, and my kids to join them. The guys were such gentleman, they could not do enough for us in making sure we were having fun. This is truly a remarkable group.

This year the US Marines had double the request for toys than last year, and collections have been doing well but they are in need of more. Helping in this way is a pleasure for me and my family, even my daughter caught the giving bug and she went shopping on Monday with her own money to help out and bought some toys to donate. It’s a great feeling as parent, its also a great feeling as a representative of Big Key to be invited to participate and give back to our community this way.

U. S. Marine Corps GETS A NEW SLEIGH!

Big Key Self Storage is starting the Holiday season early this year by collecting unwrapped gifts for the Toys for Tots organization. We are working very closely with the U. S. Marine Corp. to ensure that children that may otherwise miss out on this Christmas Season are visited by Santa too!


U. S. Marine Corps will be using our rental truck as their sleigh for their toy drive on November 12th and December 4th, 10th and 13th.

They will also being using our truck for the following exciting events:

• Nascar Racing Event in Homestead Florida on November 18, 19, and 21

• Toy Fest at Es Morada Florida on Dec. 16th, 17th, and 18th.

The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

Big Key Self Storage has found ways to “E-recycle” those older gadgets.

How Do You Get Rid of Your Old Technology?

Whenever an old gadget sees it’s day it usual gets tossed out in the nearest trash, as we are discarding the old to make way for the brand new. The problem with this trend is that as that older technology ends up in a pile similar to a scene in the Disney movie “WALL-E”.

When it comes to recycling Big Key Self Storage has done some research to assist our community. At Big Key Self Storage we have partners with Florida E-Waste Recycling and Cell Phone for Soldiers to become your one stop drop off location for all those old gadgets.

According to EPA estimates for 2006-7, In America, 30,000 computers are estimated to be discarded each year, while in Europe at least 100,000 phones are disposed of as well. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that only 15-20% of these gadgets and machines are actually recycled, or e- recycled. The rest of these electronics go directly into landfills and incinerators. The left over 80-85% of these materials are being disposed of incorrectly and have adverse affects on human beings and animals, as well as the environment.

“Americans will replace an estimated 130 million cell phones this year,” says Mike Newman, vice president of ReCellular, “with the majority of phones either discarded or stuffed in a drawer. Most people don’t realize that the small sacrifice of donating their unwanted phones can have a tremendous benefit for a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soldiers.”
